Used RV Travel Trailer Buying Guide

When shopping for a used rv travel trailer, there are some things to look for that may save you some grief in the future.  What may seem like a good deal on a vintage camper may not be so great after repair work is factored in.

    Ask Questions

Ask questions about the trailer’s history.  What work, if any, has been done to the trailer? Was it involved in any accidents? Has it gone unused for any extended amount of time? Has the trailer been stored inside or outside? If a trailer has been sitting in a field for years it may have sustained environment and weather damage or  have become home to mice or other animals.

    Component Integrity

Check the electrical hookups and test the lights.  Make sure all the electrical components are functional or at least determine which faults exist.  Make sure the refrigerator and the stove are operational. Ensure the water and waste tanks and lines are in good condition.

    Water damage

If a trailer has leaks, then there is a good chance some or even all of the wood needs to be replaced.  The walls should be sturdy, not soft or squishy.  If the walls, floor or ceiling have soft areas it is a sign of water damage and future repair work. Look for damage to the exterior skin of the trailer where water may be able to enter.  If the water damage is extensive the trailer may need to be taken apart, down to the frame, to replace the affected wood.  Check the corners and around vents and windows for any signs of leaking.  Also be sure to look for rust on the metal frame under the trailer.

    Signs of infestation

Unsecured vents can become an entrance for unwanted travel trailer guests like insects and field mice, who like to sharpen their teeth on electrical cables and anything else they can find.  Look for signs of animal life like feces or chewed shavings on the floor or in drawers and cabinets.

    Title and registration paperwork

Make sure the title and registration paperwork are valid and in the seller’s name, or that you can register a trailer under other circumstances in your state.

The travel trailer is an iconic piece of modern history and its popularity continues among travelers and collectors today. It not only provides the freedom to travel in comfort, but does so with its own unique style that has endeared itself to people the world over. Travel trailers began in the early 1920?s and quickly rose to fame as more and more people were taking to the roads.  They allow travellers to explore the great outdoors while maintaining the safety and luxury of a cozy home on wheels wherever their journeys take them.  Often referred to as “toasters on wheels” or “tin cans,” travel trailers were the most recognizable shape on the road and their popularity still holds strong today. MyVintageTravelTrailer.com is a celebration of the rich vintage travel trailer culture and those who seek out and restore these vintage RV treasures.
